Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center
This is a settlement for the Medical Malpractice lawsuit.
Lafayette, LA: (May-09-07) A class action medical malpractice lawsuit was filed against Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, accusing Dr. Mehmood Patel, a cardiologist, of doing unnecessary angiograms, angioplasties and stent implants. Patel, who faces 94 criminal counts in a federal case involving 78 patients, denied the malpractice allegations and expects to be vindicated at trial. The suit claimed that the exact number of patients who went through unnecessary cardiac procedures at Lafayette General and at Patel's own clinic, Acadiana Cardiology LLC., was unknown. In a settlement reached, the Lafayette hospital has agreed to pay $7.4 million to settle its part in the class action suit. The settlement, which will mean an average of $12,000 for each of the patients, is the second for the hospital. Last year, it agreed to pay the US Justice Department $3.8 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that it failed to act on complaints by one of Patel's associates.
