Bridgeton, NJ
Bridgeton, NJ: (May-10-07) Rigoverto Diaz, 22, an immigrant, filed suit against the city of Bridgeton and the Bridgeton Police Department, alleging that he was robbed and beaten in 2006 by a city police officer. Diaz claimed in his suit that the incident was racially motivated, that patrolmen Carl Holliday and Gregory Willis picked him up the night of November 10, 2006, and drove him to the parking lot at Mary Elmer Lake, where he was beaten and robbed. Following Diaz' claims, Willis, 26, resigned as a city police officer. On December 18, 2006, he pleaded guilty to third-degree official misconduct and faces three years in state prison following sentencing. The suit further alleged that the Mexico-born man suffered pain, disability and loss of enjoyment of life, after sustaining several injuries that required emergency room treatment. Because of injuries sustained in the alleged robbery, which included internal injuries, a claim was filed with the state Victims of Crime Compensation Board (VCCB), which resulted in the VCCB paying $1,600 toward Diaz's medical bills. The city's insurance carrier paid $25,000 to settle the claim, though the settlement amount itself was kept confidential.
