Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District
Urbana, IL: (May-15-07) The family of Carolyn Jeffers, a University of Illinois graduate student who died after being struck by a bus in a crosswalk in 2004, filed suit against the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. Jeffers was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 27, 2004, at Carle Foundation Hospital because of multiple traumatic injuries. The suit claimed that Christopher Davis was driving a bus south on Goodwin Avenue and stopped at the northwest corner of the intersection at Gregory Drive. Davis claimed to have stopped at that intersection to let passengers off and on the bus. He did not see Jeffers and continued turning the bus, causing her death. Jeffers, a 21-year-old graduate student in biochemistry then living in Champaign, was crossing the street when she was struck by the bus at 6:45 p.m. In a settlement reached, Circuit Judge Jeffrey Ford granted a summary judgment in favor of Robert Jeffers, father and administrator of the estate of Carolyn Jeffers, against the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, awarding him $1.1 million in damages.
