Everglades Correctional Institution

Miami-Dade, FL: (May-15-07) The family of 36-year-old Sergio Morejon filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Everglades Correctional Institution, after the death of the Miami-Dade inmate. The suit claimed that Sergio Morejon was brutally beaten by fellow inmates and didn't receive medical help in a timely manner.CBS4 News, a partner of the Miami Herald obtained a surveillance video of 36-year-old Sergio Morejon at the Everglades Correctional Institution on February 24, 2004, just after receiving a beating at the hands of fellow inmates. The suit claimed that it took 40 minutes before Morejon received medical attention and he died of complications from head trauma. In a settlement reached, the judge awarded his family $1 million in damages. The settlement was paid off by Wexford Health Sources, a corrections medical services contractor; however the family still has pending litigation against the Miami-Dade Department of Corrections.
