James Tillman
Hartford, CT: (May-16-07) James Tillman, an east Hartford man who spent 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, was awarded $5 million by the unanimous passing of a bill by the general assembly. The vote in the House to give James Tillman a $5 million dollar check was 148 to 0 and it was immediately sent to the Senate. James Tillman was released from prison in 2006, following DNA evidence that showed he did not commit the rape that he spent 18 years of his life in prison for. Since his release, he has worked two jobs and has spent time mentoring young people and sharing the experience of prison life. In February 2007, during her budget address, Gov. Jodi Rell offered Tillman a $500,000, tax free check, along with her apology from the state. But Tillman, who is being represented for free by several attorneys, thought it was not enough and most state lawmakers agree. As part of the settlement agreement, Tillman agreed to drop all claims against the state, the city, and any individual or institution that may have been a part of his wrongful incarceration.
