North County Transit District
Oceanside, CA: (May-25-07) West Coast Rail Constructors, the company hired to build a 22-mile light-rail line for the North County Transit District, filed suit against the Transit District over issues ranging from extra grading to flawed construction plans. In a settlement reached, North County Transit District agreed to pay the Sprinter contractor $12.2 million, adding to the Sprinter's already hefty budget, leaving the light rail line just $24 million less of a spending cap set by the federal government in 2006. The deal pushes the Sprinter's total cost to $460 million, according to Richard Hannasch, the transit district's finance director.
As a fallout of the settlement figures, though having little consequence for the Sprinter, it could hurt the region's ability to attract federal dollars for future projects. The project, nearing its not to exceed spending mark as ordered by the Federal Transit Administration in 2006, still holds hope of not overshooting budgets. [NORTH COUNTY TIMES: LIGHT RAIL BUDGET]
