Safety-Kleen Systems

Espanola, NM: (May-25-07) The State Environment Department filed charges against Safety-Kleen Systems, an Albuquerque service center that receives and ships large volumes of hazardous waste each year, including spent solvents, ignitable waste and corrosive substances. The suit claimed that the company indulged in improper hazardous waste management practices at its Albuquerque service center. A department investigation revealed that the violations included failure to perform certain tests on a hazardous waste storage tank, failure to post warning signs in certain areas, and not storing hazardous waste in a way that allows inspection under permit requirements.

In a settlement reached, Safety-Kleen Systems agreed to pay a $10,000 penalty and take steps to correct violations the department found during an inspection in October 2005. As part of the settlement agreement, Safety-Kleen also agreed to do two environmental projects in Espanola. One, already completed, removed old, unneeded laboratory chemicals from McCurdy School in Espanola. Under the other, Safety-Kleen will coordinate with the North Central Solid Waste Authority on a household hazardous waste collection event in the community. [HOUSTON CHRONICLE: HAZARDOUS WASTE]
