Sidley Austin LLP
Chicago, IL: (May-23-07) The Internal Revenue Service filed charges against Sidley Austin LLP, following the federal government's investigation of tax shelter opinions provided by a former partner. Raymond Ruble was fired from Sidley Austin in October 2003 and indicted on criminal charges two years later in 2005. He pleaded not guilty and his trial is scheduled for September 2007. The suit claimed that the company was guilty of oversight and negligent monitoring of its financial practices.
In a settlement reached, Sidley Austin agreed to pay a $39.4 million civil penalty to the Internal Revenue Service to settle and close the federal government's investigation of tax shelter opinions. The company claimed that having resolved these issues with the government and with the vast majority of claims by individual taxpayers they have taken significant steps in putting the tax shelter situation behind them. Sidley Austin is further embroiled in an age discrimination lawsuit filed in 2005 by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which alleges the firm unlawfully forced 31 partners to retire at age 65 in October of 1999. The lawsuit seeks to abolish Sidley Austin's mandatory retirement policy. [CHICAGO BUSINESS NEWS]
