Cemex Corp.
Lee County, FL: (May-31-07) Lee County filed a lawsuit against Cemex Corp. over damage to the San Carlos Park arches. Originally built in 1964 at Constitution Boulevard and U.S. 41, the arches mark the entrance of the south Lee community. The arches were damaged after a Krehling Industries boom truck plowed into them Jan. 10, 2004. Because the crash damaged more than half the structure, state law required it be torn down. The arches were demolished in September 2005. The county's appraiser, Woodward Hanson Associates, determined the arches' value to be $51,370 when the damage took place. The county sued Cemex last May for cost of reconstruction after Krehling backed out of an insurance settlement. In 2005, Cemex had acquired Krehling, assuming its liabilities. In a settlement reached, Lee County Commissioners will receive for $51,370, 15% of the $328,795 cost to rebuild the arches.
