Lakin Law Firm
Madison County, OK: (May-30-07) Stephen Williams of Chouteau, OK, filed a legal malpractice claim against Thomas Lakin and the Lakin Law Firm of Wood River. The suit claimed Williams lost his $3 million, tax-free structured settlement with Union Pacific over a 1991 injury, when the money manager absconded with the money. A federal judge in Oklahoma has entered a default judgment of $3,752,601.80 against Thomas Lakin and the Lakin Law Firm. The suit was filed in federal court on Sept. 26, 2006, and US District Judge Claire Eagan, chief judge of the Northern District of Oklahoma, entered the judgment after the Lakin Firm did not appear in the case, even after being granted extra time to answer. The case was transferred to the US District Court of the Southern District of Illinois on May 24, 2007. Lakin was indicted on charges of cocaine use and distribution as well as transporting a minor male to Malibu, with the intent to engage in sexual activity. He is free on a $250,000 unsecured bond and his trial is set to begin Jan. 10, 2008, in Benton.
