Christ of the Hills Monastery and the Ecumenical Monks
Johnson City, TX: (May-31-07) James Wright Jr., a former novice monk, filed a sexual molestation lawsuit against the Christ of the Hills Monastery's founder, Samuel Greene Jr., and followers William Hughes and Walter Christley, alleging that they abused him in the late 90s. In a settlement reached, a State District Judge ordered that the monastery and the Ecumenical Monks, a nonprofit organization that runs the monastery, pay Wright a sum of $1 million. Wright also reached a confidential settlement in December with the New York-based Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, which he had also sued. Greene, Hughes and Christley and two other followers of Greene, Hugh Fallon and Jonathan Hitt, are awaiting trial on charges of sexual assault of a child and organized crime. In agreeing to the settlement, none of the defendants agreed to any wrongdoing.
