Vesuvius USA Corporation
Springfield, IL: (Jun-07-07) The State of Illinois brought charges against Vesuvius USA Corporation, claiming that the company contributed to the damage of natural resources in Coles County that were injured by a June 2001 chemical spill. Vesuvius USA develops, manufactures, and markets high performance specialty ceramics, refractory products, and control systems for industrial applications. On June 22, 2001, Vesuvius USA experienced a factory malfunction that caused furfural, an industrial chemical that in low concentrations is harmful to aquatic life, to enter the Cassell, Riley, and Kickapoo Creeks, tributaries of the Embarras River. Biologists documented injury to aquatic flora and fauna within nine miles of the tributary system as a result of this release. While Vesuvius took immediate steps to investigate and clean up the released material, the state of Illinois sought recovery for damages to natural resources not addressed in the initial clean up.
In a settlement reached, Vesuvius will pay a total of $154,648 to the state for natural resource restoration and educational projects. The settlement will be paid through the Natural Resource Restoration Trust Fund that will help fund natural resource restoration in the Embarras River watershed. [JG-TC NEWS: CHEMICAL SPILL]

Attorney Calls BP Texas City Plant to Account
February 6, 2010
Attorney Tony Buzbee offered BP a chance to settle, but the company denied that there had ever even been a toxic spill at its plant in Texas City and attacked the credibility of the workers who claimed they had been exposed to dangerous chemicals in April 2007. So, Buzbee and the 10 plaintiffs went to trial. "The jury gave exactly the number I asked for—I would say we were very pleased," he says. "One hundred million dollars is one month's profit at that plant." READ MORE
