Robert J. Matkovich
Chula Vista, CA: (Jun-07-07) The State Fair Political Practices Commission brought charges against Robert J. Matkovich, a Chula Vista dentist, alleging he made illegal campaign contributions to Steve Padilla during his successful 2002 mayoral campaign. The commission's investigation of Matkovich's contributions began in 2004. In 2002, Chula Vista had a campaign contribution limit of $250 per person per election. In his donations to Padilla, Matkovich in some cases reimbursed people for their contributions. Matkovich made 21 donations totaling $5,250 to friends of Padilla in the names of his employees, business associates and their friends and family, a violation of the state Political Reform Act. In other cases, he gave them cash so they could make contributions. FPPC officials claimed that these violations denied the public of information regarding the true source of Padilla's financial support, during the time when he was running for mayor of Chula Vista. In a settlement reached, Matkovich has accepted responsibility for all 22 violations and has agreed to pay a $99,000 fine to the FPPC.
