LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Westra Construction, Inc.
Waupun, WI: (Jun-10-07) The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) filed a lawsuit on behalf of over forty eight former employees of Westra Construction, Inc. against their employer. The suit alleged that the Watertown plant violated the state's wages payable law and business closing notification law when it ceased operating in April 2005. It claimed that when a business closes, the whole community suffers, and that its workers should be paid, and those workers' rights should be strongly enforced.
In an out-of-court settlement agreed upon, Westra Construction will pay $87,145.95 in wages owed to the forty eight employees. Under the settlement, those employees who opted to participate will receive checks in varying amounts totaling $87,145.95, which represents the unpaid wages of qualifying employees, as well as a compromise amount of the penalties assessed under the business closing notification law. The claim and settlement was processed by the Department of Justice on behalf of the Department of Workforce Development. [FOND DU LAC REPORTER: COMPANY CLOSING]
