New England Gas Company
Boston, MA: (Jun-08-07) Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley's office and New England Gas Company (NE Gas) reached a settlement that will significantly reduce the company's requested rate increases and provide other benefits for the citizens of Fall River and North Attleboro. The settlement was negotiated with NE Gas after the company filed a notice of its intent for a general rate proceeding with the Department of Public Utilities. The company was originally seeking a distribution increase of approximately $7.8 million, or approximately 7.5%.
The agreement significantly reduces NE Gas' planned rate increase by $3.6 million. In addition, for the winter 2008 heating season, NE Gas will work cooperatively with the Attorney General, and other interested groups, to implement a fixed-price gas supply option for residential and small commercial firm gas customers. Customers will be able to lock-in gas prices for the entire winter heating season, the equivalent to fixed price contracts for heating oil.
Further, as part of the settlement agreement, the rate increases will be phased in over two years to lessen the impact on customers. The company will return to customers $546,219 that was improperly collected from customers because of a mathematical error. These funds will be returned beginning on November 1, 2007 and will partially offset the rate increase. [AGO: BILL OVERCHARGES]
