AAA Central West Jersey, AAA Mid-Atlantic, and Campana Systems
Middlesex County, NJ: (Jun-12-07) Richard Douglas Cannon filed suit against AAA Central West Jersey and AAA Mid-Atlantic, after a tow-truck driver crashed into his car. Cannon, now 27, was driving from his home in Rahway to the college when his 1984 Ford Mustang broke down in the middle lane of Route 1 on Sept. 6, 2001. A tow-truck driver for E&D Auto Repair in Parlin, now defunct, was heading to help a motorist on behalf of AAA, but crashed into the Mustang. The Mustang's gas tank exploded and the car burst into flames, leaving Cannon with third-degree burns on 58% of his body. The driver of the tow-truck, Gerard Taber, claimed that he became distracted by an onboard AAA computer, which led him to crash into Cannon's vehicle.
In a settlement reached, Cannon will receive $31.25 million. AAA Central West Jersey and AAA Mid-Atlantic, now merged, have agreed to pay $27.25 million of that amount. The insurance company for the tow-truck company and driver, Harleysville Insurance, settled for the maximum coverage amount of $2 million. And the Campana Systems, which sold the on-board computer to AAA, agreed to pay $2 million. [HOME NEWS TRIBUNE: TOW TRUCK CRASH]
