George R. Schell
Virginia Beach, VA: (Jun-12-07) The family of Judy Broadway filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Norfolk businessman George R. Schell's estate after an aircraft that Schell was flying crashed into the backyard of a Lawson Forest home in 2006. Federal aviation officials determined that Schell, the pilot of a small plane, failed to maintain proper airspeed while trying to land, causing the aircraft to unexpectedly stall. According to a probable cause report released by the National Transportation Safety Board, an open cabin door also distracted the Norfolk businessman. The crash killed Schell, 69, and his girlfriend, Judy Broadway, 63, of Rockledge, FL. Two dogs on board also died. The lawsuit claimed that Schell was negligent in the crash because he took off from Norfolk International Airport without securing the plane's door. It alleged that when Schell tried to return to the airport, he failed to climb to a safe altitude and maintain adequate speed during a turn.
In a settlement reached, Schell's family estate has agreed to pay $300,000 to Broadway's family, which includes two daughters and a son. The total settlement includes $100,000 in attorney fees and court costs. [HAMPTON ROADS: AIRCRAFT DEATH]
