Oxnard City, CA

Ventura, CA: (Jun-13-07) In a bid to avoid costly litigation and a lawsuit filed against it by its contractor, the Oxnard City Council agreed to spend an additional $846,500 on construction costs for its new Victoria Lakes golf course. The city agreed to pay the additional dollars after negotiating a settlement with Duininck Brothers, a Minnesota-based golf course construction company.

The issue stemmed from a dispute over costs for hauling dirt to cover the former landfill site. The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, which opposed using the landfill site for a golf course, required roughly two to nine feet of dirt over the 85-acre site. Both sides were also at debate over costs to build cart paths, curbs and a bridge and without the settlement, Duininck could have successfully sued the city for up to $1.3 million. The unanimous vote brings the total cost of the new 18-hole course the second at the city's River Ridge Golf Club to $7.8 million, about $1.2 million more than the original contract.
