Broward, FL: (Jun-16-07) Three men, Carl Stephen Rosati, Peter Roussonicolos, and Peter Dallas, filed a civil rights violation lawsuit against the Broward Sheriff's Office after they were jailed for 16 months and two of them faced the death penalty for a murder they did not commit. Rosati, Roussonicolos, and Dallas filed the suit in 1993 against the Sheriff's Office and former homicide detectives Steve Wiley, Dominick Gucciardo, and Sgt. Thomas Murray. Wiley and Gucciardo have since retired, and Murray is stationed in Deerfield Beach. The case rested on Dallas' false confession, which he has said was made amid pressure from detectives.
The three men reached individual settlements with the Sheriffs Office as a resolution to the lawsuit. Dallas was the first to settle with the Sheriff's Office in October 2003, for $225,000, Rosati settled for $1 million in September 2006, and in April 2007, Roussonicolos settled for $89,000. A judge had ruled that the amounts would remain confidential until the third and final settlement was worked out. In addition, the Sheriff's office paid $1,411,427 in legal fees.
