LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Palo Alto, CA
Palo Alto, CA: (Jun-17-07) Two former employees filed suit against Friends of Westwind, a city-owned horse stable in Los Altos Hills, alleging that they were not paid for all the hours they worked. They claimed that apart from not being paid, they were forced to live in substandard conditions in a barn. Despite its idyllic location in the hills over Silicon Valley, the private club has been at the center of a battle that includes lawsuits and calls for new leadership. Another lawsuit was filed against the historic Westwind Barn by a longtime boarder who claimed that her horses were starved and that she was forced to leave the barn. Even a founder of Friends of Westwind, the private club that has been in charge of the barn since 1977, says the group should be ousted and a concessionaire picked to run the signature property. The town council ultimately decides who runs the property that it has owned since the 1970s. Friends of Westwind pays the town $20,000 a year in rent, which goes toward repairs. In a settlement reached with the former employees, the town agreed to pay $75,000 to resolve the employment lawsuit.
