New York, NY

New York, NY: (Jun-21-07) Neron Banks and other laborers in Local 376, who work for the city Department of Environmental Protection as well as the Sanitation, Transportation and Education departments filed repeated complaints against the city of New York, alleging that their hourly wages were significantly less than their peers in the private sector.

In a settlement reached, the city ended the long drawn out legal dispute by agreeing to award one-time payments to 1,000 workers. The average settlement was $90,000, bringing the total settlement to $90 million. Further, the deal between City Hall and District Council 37 raised the workers' hourly wages. Construction laborers will now get paid $34.27 an hour, an increase of more than 43%, and highway repairmen will be paid $36.48 an hour, roughly a 52% raise. [NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: NYC LABORERS]
