Lauderdale County School District

Lauderdale County, MS: (Jun-23-07) Joey Knight, former Southeast Elementary Principal, filed a civil action lawsuit against the Lauderdale County School District and Superintendent David Little. Knight filed a complaint in federal court in 2006 to recover actual and punitive damages for violation of his First Amendment rights. His contract was non-renewed in February 2006. Knight, a Republican, challenged Little, then a Democrat, in the 2003 election for the position of Lauderdale County superintendent. Knight claims his decision to exercise his First Amendment rights by running for office resulted in retaliation against him, his wife Denise, and the schoolchildren of Lauderdale County.

In a settlement reached, the Lauderdale County School District agreed to pay Knight $100,000 to resolve the civil action suit. Little stated that the $100,000 is not the full amount Knight received. He said the school district's insurance company paid the remainder of the settlement. According to the minutes from the school board meeting, some of the damages sought by Knight were excluded from insurance coverage. Those damages included emotional distress, wrongful termination, and lost wages. [MERIDIAN STAR: POLITICAL SUPERINTENDENT]
