College Square Mall Associates
Cedar Falls, IA: (Jun-30-07) The Justice Department brought charges against the owners of Cedar Falls' College Square Mall, following an investigation that was spurred on by a complaint filed by a woman using a wheelchair. The complaint, filed in 1999, alleged that the disabled woman faced difficulty getting to parts of the mall. Investigators looked at a variety of sites, including common areas and tenant spaces, as well as other buildings on the property. Areas addressed included both entrances to the mall building as well as access to the individual stores inside, dressing rooms and restrooms. The report stated that some of the ramps in the mall were deemed too steep to allow wheelchair access. The former mall owners, College Square Mall Associates, agreed to a settlement with the Justice Department, in which they paid a $40,000 civil penalty. The settlement further required the defendants to ensure that the 205 alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act are fixed.
