Weston, CT: (Jul-03-07) Jonas Wilson, a Weston man, filed a lawsuit against the city and the Weston Police Department, alleging that the police used excessive force during his arrest. In the complaint, which was filed on Aug. 1, 2005 in Stamford Superior Court, Wilson claimed that on May 18, 2004, while he was under arrest, he was taken to Weston police headquarters for processing and asked to submit to a chemical test. He said that during the processing, several police officers without warning, and without a proper reason, violently slammed his head first onto a hard floor opening a large laceration on it. The suit termed the action unnecessary and excessive under all circumstances then present. Wilson also claimed his Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights were violated, and he suffered physical pain and suffering requiring the expenditures of money for treatment and emotional pain and anguish. He sought damages in excess of $15,000.
The then police chief said the incident was captured on the department's videotape camera, and in his opinion, the tape proved there was no excessive force used by the police department. In a settlement reached, the Weston Police Department agreed to pay Wilson $7,000 in exchange for him dropping all charges against the department. The town's insurance carrier, Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency (CIRMA), will pay the settlement on the town's behalf. [ACORN ONLINE: EXCESSIVE FORCE]
