Sound Transit
Seattle, WA: (Jul-05-07) Kiewit, a construction subcontractor, filed suit against Sound Transit, claiming that the company caused cost overruns when it delayed completion of the design for the maintenance facility of the initial 15.7-mile, $2.4 billion light rail line between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport.
In a settlement reached, Sound Transit tentatively agreed to pay an additional $16 million to Kiewit to end the dispute over design delays and material cost increases. As a condition of the deal, Sound Transit will settle with Kiewit for less than a third of the $45 million in uncompensated losses the company claimed in its lawsuit filed in 2006 against Sound Transit. If accepted by Sound Transit's board, the agreement will increase the cost of Kiewit's contract for the operations center and 1 1/2 miles of Sodo-area track to $123.8 million. The original amount was $104 million but was increased because of the addition of a second station and removal of unanticipated amounts of hazardous material from the operations center site.
