Palazzolo and Lombardo LLC
Sterling Heights, MI: (Jul-09-07) The US Justice Department brought charges against developer Palazzolo and Lombardo LLC of Michigan, alleging that the Sterling Heights housing complex had been constructed in a manner that was restrictive for people with disabilities. The suit claimed that the ability to live independently in one's own home is a basic civil right and that the development was built with steps to the front doors and other features, violated the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In a settlement reached, the company, along with architect Robert Lipka PC of Romeo, agreed to pay a $25,000 civil penalty, pay up to $25,000 to people harmed by the development's lack of accessibility, and establish a $96,000 fund to retrofit condominiums that have already been sold. Palazzolo and Lombardo LLC have already built ramps to make ground-floor apartments accessible at the complex on Cherry Creek Lane, called The Preserves. The company will also take steps to make condominiums, part of the same development, equally accessible. [DETROIT NEWS: HOUSING ACCESS]
