This is a settlement for the Civil / Human Rights lawsuit.
Portland, OR: (Jul-09-07) David and Suzanne Brownlow, an evangelical Christian family, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the state of Oregon, after a state trooper violated their rights to protest the Iraq war. The Brownlows had a son stationed in Iraq, and said that they were fighting to bring him home. The suit stated that in 2006, the Brownlows and their 12-year-old daughter were on a sidewalk in Clackamas waving a flag that read "Support Our Troops Bring Them Home," so the traffic on the interstate below could see. The Brownlows said a state trooper approached them, told them they were breaking the law, and threatened to arrest them if they did not leave. According to their complaint, when they asked what laws were broken, Senior Trooper Ken Moore told them that when a trooper tells you 'You are breaking the law,' that is one needed to know. When they refused to move, knowing that they were within their rights, the trooper grabbed their banner, crushed it and threw it in their vehicle and took them to a nearby parking lot for further questioning. In a settlement reached, the state agreed to pay the family $25,000 for the harassment they suffered and their First Amendment violation.
