University of Washington
Washington, DC: (Jul-16-07) A man filed a sexual molestation lawsuit against the University of Washington (UW), claiming that he was repeatedly molested and raped at age 13 by a female mental patient nearly three times his age. The suit alleged that the teen was admitted to a UW hospital psychiatric unit for a two-week evaluation. The teen was the only minor among a group of 25 to 30 adult patients who were free to walk about the ward and patient rooms, which did not have locks. Patients, who were voluntarily committed, could also leave during the day and often visited the adjacent ship canal. By the second day of his stay, a patient named Linda, believed to have been 36 at the time, began abusing him. The abuse continued on average twice a day in his room, in the men's bathroom, in a boathouse, and in a boat moored on the ship canal. The woman also would fondle him while they were in the recreation room and other common areas. In a settlement reached, the suit, filed for a $3 million claim in 2005, was finally resolved with a $480,000 payout to the Edmonds man.
