Hamilton County, OH

Hamilton County, OH: (Jul-17-07) A lawsuit was brought against Hamilton County in 2002, alleging that the coroner's office was responsible for removing and keeping body parts without first notifying families. The suit claimed that in each case, the coroner's office kept a body part, usually a heart or a brain, for study to help determine the cause of death. Some families said they did not learn until long after a relative's death that a body part was removed. The county argued that coroner's offices across the country routinely keep body parts without notification.

In a settlement reached, the county agreed to settle the long pending litigation by paying $6,000,000 to the effected families. Officials stated that nearly 1,000 families could be eligible to receive a share of the settlement. Though, however, that it's unlikely all or even most will be found. The settlement includes autopsies by the coroner's office from 1991 through 2002. [ENQUIRER: CORONER BODY PARTS]
