LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Logistec USA Incorporated and Sherwood Lumber Company
New London, CT: (Jul-18-07) The family of Michael Ryckman, a former truck driver, who died after he was crushed by a load of plywood at New London's State Pier, brought a lawsuit against Logistec USA Incorporated, Ryckman's employer. The suit alleged that Logistec USA was responsible for the wrongful death as the accident took place while Ryckman was on the job. The Occupational and Safety Health Administration fined Logistec $15,500 for serious violations following an investigation of Ryckman's death. The federal agency said the forklift was overloaded and had a faulty parking brake, a hydraulic leak, worn hydraulic lines, a broken headlight and a broken horn. In a settlement reached with the family, Logistec USA agreed to pay $1.2 million to resolve the wrongful death suit. Sherwood Lumber Company, which packaged the plywood, agreed to pay $150,000.
