LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Milton, WI
Milton, WI: (Jul-27-07) The Citizens for Responsible Development brought a lawsuit against the city of Milton, alleging that the city council violated the Wisconsin state Open Meetings Law when it met in secret in 2004 and 2005. The meetings pertained to the city's new ethanol plant. A state appeals court agreed on March 8, 2007 that the city council violated the law with closed-door meetings while trying to convince United Ethanol to build a plant in the Eastside Industrial Park.
In a settlement reached, it was concluded that the city pay between $35,000 and $40,000 to resolve the litigation. Sources claim that Milton's insurance carrier, not taxpayers, will pay the tens of thousands of dollars spent in the legal battle. The settlement amount will go towards paying for the Citizens for Responsible Development's legal fees.
