Aggregate Industries NE Inc.

Boston, MA: (Jul-28-07) A lawsuit was filed against Aggregate Industries NE Inc., alleging the construction company supplied substandard concrete to Boston's Big Dig project. In a settlement reached, the company admitted to the allegations and agreed to pay $50 million to settle the case. Under the agreement, Aggregate Industries will not be barred from bidding on federal and state contracts as the company gets the majority of its business from government jobs. Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley stated that the authorities advocate using $27 million from the settlement for a fund to pay for future maintenance on the Big Dig, the biggest urban highway project ever. The project, plagued by cost overruns and delays, came into the limelight when a chunk of concrete fell on a moving car, killing a woman. [UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL: SUBSTANDARD CONCRETE]
