Project Straight
Oakland County, MI: (Jul-29-07) Two lawsuits were filed against Oakland County physician Aeneas Guiney, alleging that he was responsible for the death of a patient. Guiney and Dr. Robert Wolf both were named in a lawsuit filed by the family of Danny Oppenheim Jr. of Kansas City, who died in 2004. Oppenheim was a patient at the doctors' now-defunct Project Straight in Troy, which claimed to offer a rapid detox treatment for people with drug addictions. Oppenheim, a 33-year-old husband and father, had flown from Kansas to undergo treatment at the facility in January 2004.
While under anesthesia, Oppenheim failed to get enough oxygen, suffered brain damage and died. The procedure used at the clinic involved administering anesthesia to patients and then giving them medication to flush the drugs out of their systems. The doctor was accused of negligence, breaching the standard of care, lacking good moral character, unlawfully administering drugs, and false advertising. The family had previously settled out of court with Wolf for an undisclosed sum. In a settlement reached with Guiney, a jury ordered that the physician pay the family $35.3 million.
