Corinthian Colleges Inc.
Orange County, CA: (Jul-31-07) California Attorney General Jerry Brown filed suit against Santa Ana-based Corinthian Colleges Inc., alleging that the college engaged in false advertising. The suit accused the for-profit operator of vocational schools of overstating the percentage of its students who obtained employment via its courses, inflated their starting salary information, and used these misrepresentations to persuade potential students to enroll. The AG's office stated that Corinthian students typically pay between $7,000 and $15,000 for vocational courses that take from six months to one year to complete and that the tuition is paid through a combination of government grants, taxpayer-subsidized loans and private loans arranged by Corinthian.
In a settlement reached, Corinthian Colleges agreed to pay $6.5 million to resolve allegations. Of the settlement amount, $5.8 million will go to restitution for students. The settlement requires that Corinthian cease offering 11 courses for 18 months, including the Pharmacy Technician program in Anaheim. [OC REGISTER: COLLEGE ADVERTISING]
