LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Hawaii, USA
Honolulu, HI: (Aug-01-07) An unnamed woman brought a lawsuit against the state, alleging that she was raped by a guard at the youth correctional facility. The legal battle that dragged on for three years exposed widespread problems at the facility. The suit stated that the victim was 15-years-old when she was taken out of her youth facility dorm and raped by guard Li'a Olione. Olione admitted liability and apologized, but he and his victim also blamed the state for understaffing the facility, poor management, and stressful conditions.
In a settlement reached, the state agreed to pay $350,000 to the rape victim and her foster parents. The victim is now 20 and sources claim that the money will help her go back to college and raise her 11-month-old son. Attorney General Mark Bennett said that the suit has led to a much better facility. [HAWAII CHANNEL: YOUTH INMATE RAPE]
