Prison Health Services
Tampa, FL: (Aug-07-07) Kimberly Grey, 37, filed a lawsuit against Prison Health Services, the Brentwood-based company that held a contract with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for health care in its two jails. The suit alleged that the company mishandled her pregnancy and said the care resulted in the death of her prematurely born son. Grey was being held at Falkenburg Road Jail when she gave birth to a son over a toilet. Sources claim that she complained for 12 hours of labor pains, but that the health care staff did not send her to a hospital. Nearly three months premature, the baby died from an infection in his lungs, according to an autopsy.
In a settlement reached, the sheriff's office, which also was sued over the incident, settled its portion of the case for $350,000, the Hillsborough County jail health care provider paid $1.25 million settlement to resolve the allegations. [TAMPA TRIBUNE: PREMATURE PREGNANCY]
