Noah's Wish
New Orleans, LA: (Aug-08-07) The California attorney general's office brought charges against Noah's Wish, a California animal rescue organization, after an investigation revealed that the organization had unsubstantiated spending practices. Noah's Wish, which spent several weeks in Slidell after the storm and received more than $8 million in donations from around the country, was financially scrutinized after it came to light that the organization spent huge sums of money in a pay raise and the purchase of new vehicles for the organization's executive director.
In a settlement reached, Noah's Wish agreed to relinquish the $4 million that remained from the donations to help the storm's animal victims, particularly those in hard-hit Slidell. The agreement stipulates that Slidell will receive $1 million to build a new animal shelter, though city officials said this week that the attorney general's office is willing to redirect as much as $3 million to Slidell to pay for a new shelter. The agreement mandated that the organization must transfer $3.8 million by Aug. 17, 2007 with the remaining $200,000 due in July 2008. [TIMES PICAYUNE: ANIMAL RESCUE FUNDS]
