Ciena Healthcare Management Inc.
Lansing, MI: (Aug-20-07) Attorney General Mike Cox's Office brought a lawsuit against Ciena Healthcare Management Inc., alleging that the facility improperly billed Medicaid and Medicare for care at four nursing homes. The joint probe focused on four of Ciena's 30 nursing homes, three in Detroit and one in Whitmore Lake. The lawsuit claimed that those facilities failed to meet residents' needs such as nutrition and hydration, medication management and ulcer care.
In a settlement reached, Ciena Healthcare Management agreed to pay $1.25 million to settle allegations. Further, as part of the settlement, Southfield-based Ciena also is entering into a five-year corporate integrity agreement that requires the nursing home chain to take measures designed to improve care provided at all Ciena facilities. According to the settlement, Ciena and three corporate officers, while denying the allegations, agreed to the deal to avoid the delay, uncertainty, inconvenience and expense of protracted litigation.
