LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Brown County, WI
Brown County, WI: (Aug-30-07) The state Department of Natural Resources brought charges against Brown County, alleging that landfill gases, including methane, volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants, weren't properly handled over the past two years as required by federal permits. The suit was filed over air pollution violations from improper gas emissions at closed landfills in Hobart and Ledgeview.
In a settlement reached, Brown County agreed to pay as much as $75,000 to resolve allegations. However, the penalties will be reduced to $50,000 if the county installs a DNR-approved landfill gas recovery project by May 1, 2009. The system must capture, and use at least 75% of the gas generated at the landfills to produce energy. Sources claim that the East Landfill in Ledgeview was open from 1976 to 2003, and the West Landfill in Hobart was open from 1977 to 1996. [GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE: LANDFILL POLLUTION]
