Concourse Housing Corp.
New York, NY: (Sep-03-07) Daniel Feliciano, an 88 year-old Bronx man, brought a personal injury claim against Concourse Housing Corp., after he suffered scalding burns while showering. Feliciano was showering in his tub in 2004, when he claimed the water suddenly became super hot. He was treated for burns to his arms, abdomen, thigh, legs, and groin. He was bed ridden in the hospital for three months and an additional three months at home. Tests found the water to be 180°. According to the US Department of Energy, water needs to be at 120° for most household functions.
In a settlement reached with Concourse Housing, owners of the building, the plumbers who installed a thermostat before the accident, and the agency that provided the nurse who was supposed to help him bathe, Feliciano received $960,000 through arbitration, ending all claims in the personal injury suit.
