Office Depot Inc.

Marin County, CA: (Sep-11-07) The Marin County district attorney's office in conjunction with district attorneys in counties around the state, brought a consumer protection lawsuit against Office Depot Inc., a Delray Beach, FL office retailer. The suit, filed after an investigation, involved inspections of checkout scanners at Office Depot stores in Marin, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Ventura, Solano, Napa, Shasta, Sacramento and Los Angeles counties. Fred Crowder, deputy director of Marin's Weights and Measures Department, said inspectors routinely check stores to see if shelf prices are accurately reflected on scanners at the checkout stand, in a surveillance program that was started when the devices became common at retail stores. The investigation revealed that Office Depot facilities showed discrepancies and inaccuracies in pricing.

In a settlement reached, Office Depot Inc. has agreed to pay $2.3 million in civil penalties and more than $280,000 to reimburse the costs of the investigation to the participating counties, to settle the consumer protection lawsuit. [MARIN INDEPENDENT JOURNAL: SCANNER DISCREPANCIES]
