Christian Longo
Lincoln County, OR: (Sep-14-07) Penelope Dupuie, the sister of MaryJane Longo, brought wrongful death lawsuits against convicted family killer Christian Longo on December 1, 2004. During the spring of 2003, Longo was convicted in Lincoln County Circuit Court of murdering his wife and three young children. The bodies of two of Longo's children had been found in an inlet to Alsea Bay in Waldport, and the bodies of his wife, MaryJane, and youngest child were found stuffed inside suitcases, submerged in Newport's Yaquina Bay. The suits were filed on behalf of each of the murdered family members and sought monetary damages, but the primary objective was to make sure Longo could never profit in any way from the deaths of his wife and children. Sources stated that Longo fought the lawsuit from his cell at the state penitentiary, filing various court documents on his own behalf over the course of more than two and a half years.
Lincoln County Circuit Court Judge Charles Littlehales granted partial summary judgment in the case, ruling the question of liability had already been settled through Longo's criminal trial. But even though liability was no longer an issue, the civil case still had to go to trial on the matter of damages. In a settlement reached, the plaintiffs were awarded the combined sum of $60.12 million. That is $13.53 million for the estate of MaryJane Longo and $15.53 million for the estates of each of the children. [NEWPORT NEWS: CONVICTED KILLER]
