Fatal Car Accidnet
This is a settlement for the Car Accidents (National) lawsuit.
Stonington, CT: (Sep-20-07) The estate of Nancy Gibson, a former Stonington harbormaster who died in an accident after being hit by a truck, filed a lawsuit against the town, a police officer and two drivers. The suit stated that after Gibson was struck, police officer Michael Peckham came on the scene and put on his overhead lights and spotlight to warn the driver of an approaching car. That driver later claimed that she was blinded by Peckham's lights, and ran over the 77-year-old Gibson. The suit named Peckham and two drivers as defendants.
Nancy Gibson left some items on her car just before she drove onto Route 1 from her Cemetery Road home. When they began falling off, she stopped and walked into the road to pick them up, putting her in line for the accident. In a settlement reached, Gibson's estate resolved the claims for $500,000. The town stated that its insurance company paid $50,000 to settle the claims against the town and Peckham. The first driver, Denis Hale of Stonington, paid $400,000 and the second driver, Beverly Comeau of Ledyard, paid $50,000. Police did not file any charges against either driver. The settlement occurred earlier this summer just before the case was set to go to trial in New London Superior Court. [THE DAY: FATAL CAR ACCIDENT]
