Robert Perlick, and Toney and Patricia Russell
Milwaukee, WI: (Sep-20-07) The Department of Housing and Urban Development brought charges against Robert Perlick, a trustee of the Walter Perlick Family Trust, and property managers Toney and Patricia Russell, accusing them of housing discrimination. The government brought the current case in 2005 after investigations by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development showed that a woman was unfairly denied an apartment. The suit, spurred on by the woman's compliant, stated that Robert Perlick, who owns the 15-unit building at 4215 W. Martin Drive, and property managers Toney and Patricia Russell told apartment hunters the property was a senior building. Rena J. Comisac, acting assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division stated that the Justice Department's vigorous enforcement of the federal fair housing laws helps ensure that parents can search for homes in which to shelter their families without fear of this kind of discrimination. Robert Perlick's grandson, T.J. Perlick-Molinari, acknowledged that the Russells had told people children weren't allowed, but said Perlick and his family had no such policy. He said two women confirmed they had lived at the Martin Drive building with children in the past.
In a settlement reached, the defendants agreed to pay a sum of $50,000 to resolve the suit. In 1992, the Department of Housing and Urban Development settled with Robert Perlick, the trust and others after alleging they had applied a "singles-only rental policy" at the same Martin Drive apartment building. [JOURNAL SENTINEL: LANDLORD BIAS]
