Eastpointe ADA Violations
Eastpointe, MI: (Sep-26-07) The US Justice Department brought charges against the city of Eastpointe, after an investigation revealed that there were more than 100 alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Federal prosecutors who investigated a complaint found 112 separate ADA violations, ranging from accessibility in the parking and entrance areas to courtroom seating, listening devices in the courtroom, and the toilet rooms. The initial complaint was filed in 2005 with the Justice Department by Judge Norene Redmond, who claimed her courtroom had inadequate facilities. The Justice Department opened an investigation and eventually determined there were violations.
As part of a settlement reached, Eastpointe was ordered to retrofit the 38th District Court building entrances, toilet rooms, the judicial bench and other facilities. The settlement is said to cost the city $100,000, though the final figure is yet to be calculated. City officials have been working in cooperation with the Justice Department on the settlement agreement, which requires Eastpointe to finish improvements to the court building within six months. According to the agreement, Eastpointe will also address problems in the jury room and judicial bench, install visual fire alarms, install signs with raised letters and Braille to all exits and other rooms, lower the drinking fountain, and provide courtroom seating for two wheelchairs.
