Elmira, NY: (Sep-27-07) Joseph Miller Senior, a former Elmira police officer, brought a lawsuit against the city after he was shot during a training exercise. Sources claimed that Miller sued the city after he was shot in the arm during a training exercise in 2003. An investigation later found the gun was loaded with live ammunition, and not practice rounds. In a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay him $130,000 as compensation. Deputy Chief Mike Robertson of the Elmira Police Department stated that as a result of the lawsuit, the department had made some procedural changes to avoid such accidents in the future. The changes included a check that live firearms don't get into training scenarios. Most of the settlement will be paid by the insurance company.
