CO Wrongful Death

Salem, VA: (Sep-29-07) The family of Walter Vierling, a retired minister killed by a carbon monoxide leak at Roanoke College, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the college and A.O. Smith Corporation, the maker of a water heater that caused the leak. The suit stated that the 91-year-old Vierling was staying in a dormitory as part of a Lutheran Church conference in July 2006, when carbon monoxide from a malfunctioning water heater spread through the building. Sources claim that more than 100 people were taken to the hospital following the incident. The family reached an out-of-court settlement with the defendants, though terms of the deal weren't announced. The city of Salem was not involved in the settlement because it was protected by the legal doctrine of sovereign immunity. [ROANOKE TIMES: CO POISONING]
