Waste Management Lockout
Castro Valley, CA: (Sep-28-07) Castro Valley Sanitary District customers brought a lawsuit against Waste Management of Alameda County, alleging that the company provided poor, sporadic, or no service during the July 2007 labor dispute. The suit stated that Waste Management locked out 481 drivers for 25 days in July 2007, bringing in replacement workers for most of its routes. Oakland-based Waste Management collects Castro Valley's garbage, yard waste, and recycled items.
In a settlement reached, Waste Management agreed to a $500,000 payout, including a contribution of $150,000 for the new Castro Valley Library. As part of the agreement, all of the district's single-family residential customers will get a one-month credit, which will be reflected on their Waste Management billing statement in November. Residents in apartments and condominiums, as well as commercial customers, will receive credit for specific missed services that were reported. Sources claimed that the district also will be reimbursed for its staffing costs for near-daily collection route reviews during the service disruption. [DAILY REVIEW: TRASH LOCKOUT]
