Military Munitions
Boston, MA: (Oct-01-07) The Massachusetts state and federal governments brought charges against Textron Systems Corp., a military contractor, alleging that it tainted groundwater at Cape Cod. The suit claimed that Textron used the so-called J-3 range at the Massachusetts Military Reservation to test munitions for three decades. The Army removed 3,500 tons of soil tainted with perchlorate and explosives from the area and is currently cleaning up plumes of contaminated groundwater, the Upper Cape's main source of drinking water.
In a settlement reached in the US District Court, Textron Systems Corp. agreed to pay a record $1 million to the state for natural resources damages, $5.6 million to the Army, and $800,000 to the Environmental Protection Agency for cleanup costs, as well as other fees and in-kind services, putting the total payout figures at $8.75 million.
