Fort Smith, AR: (Oct-01-07) The federal government brought a housing discrimination lawsuit against the owners of an apartment complex in Fort Smith, alleging that they refused to rent to families with children. As part of a settlement reached, the owners of Phoenix Village Apartments agreed to pay up to $165,000 in compensation to those harmed by the policy. The defendants will also have to pay $20,000 in civil penalties. The settlement with the federal government also calls for several corrective measures, including training, a nondiscrimination policy, record keeping, and monitoring, so as to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.
